Art, music and Culture in Censorship

Oh the joy's of censorship. How it just erks me so!!!

In the art world, you'd probably be viciously attacked with sculpting tools if you tried to say that a painter or a scluptor should not display so openly not only nudity, but also current events, political statements, and the overall shock value many artists look for. To say anything on censorship in art would would be like telling a baker he shouldn't use sugar cause it's fattening (Because sugar makes it DELICIOUS!). I find the same with art. It's like all the nitty-gritty fine details that can sometimes make a work almost disturbing, is what makes it real. Just think of how weird going to a gallery or a museum would be if you went to see Donatello's David and rather than being naked they did the Family guy thing and made him fat enough that you wouldn't see his naked parts. Think of how much weirder sex ed would have been if the teacher had to verbally explain everything (I don't think anyone wants that). So what makes that any different?

I think a great deal of the problems with nudity are that when you think of a naked image, you might think of porn. Not every bit of nudity is meant for that. The best example that comes to mind is Alanis Morisette's video for Thank You. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOgpT5rEKIU ) she's barely covered the entire time. But it's not to look sexy. It makes tthe meaning of the song so much bolder. She's exposing herself not only by her lack of coverage, but also that she's opening a door to the world she was in for a great deal of time. I just don't see the big deal in people being just as covered as they were when they were born. It's like the shyness in being in the nude bothers people. In the same breath, I don't want to see a re-enactment of Blink-182's What's My Age Again? video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7l5ZeVVoCA) but I think it's kind of awesome the guys were ballzy enough to run around naked and have some fun.

I just think we need to let loose some. I find it kind of dumb when I'm rocking out to a song on the radio, and I scream out a lyric that they felt would be bad for my ears. (Oh no! not a rapper singing about a ladies body in a less than workplace appropriate fashion!) In some ways i find that in music it's probably not good to have songs with a great deal of swearing playing when you're at work, or with little kids. (This is why i LOOOOOOVE satellite radio). but after the little kiddies go to bed, I say it's cool to have some nasty words. On the same note, it's okay for Rihanna to sing about S&M, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdS6HFQ_LUc <- Probably the worst of the videos on here) and Lady Gaga to sing that she wants to take a ride on your 'disco stick' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mB0tP1I-14) but it's not okay for Down With Webster (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71S9ou2gcqE) to spell out S-H-I-!?#$@%!. Who's to say what is worse?

Finally, I'd like to end with a video loaded with some good-old fashioned, wholesome sexual innuendo's.

Enjoy!
-Grace :)

P.S. I'm sorry if I offend anyone, I really don't mean to, I just get opinionated on certain topics.
P.P.S. The video's are probably not the best to view at work or any of that, but I'll leave it to your discretion.
